Health Update

Buddy still amazes me on a regular basis! Last night he went out before bed to do his thing. He often runs in like a mad dog afterwards. I've been waiting for him to hit the wall and he did! He flew in at full speed across the rug, still going when he reached the kitchen tile floor. Too fast, look out. He actually managed to turn his side into the cupboard before he hit. It was hilarious. And he just kept on going. That's my boy!

Buddy is Losing Weight

Mar 14th, 2009 by Joanne | 1

Just within the last few weeks really, the fat pads on Buddy’s lower back are disappearing. Almost as quickly as they came. Strange. I haven’t changed his diet enough to warrant what I’m seeing here. I just gave the go ahead to my Mom,who is the cookie giver at night, to give him a few more each night. I had a heck of a time getting her to cut back. Maybe his weight loss is as simple as that. I was SOOOO worried about his getting too heavy, not much more than a month ago. I hope it is that simple, please.

He also has a few new bumps that only recently appeared. I’m sorry, this is difficult to write. And, it’s Buddy’s 10th birthday in two days, Mar 16th. I’m making him a liver cake just like I used to. One new bump is on his front chest at the top of his right leg. There is no hair loss, just a raised bump, kind of like a small hive. It doesn’t seem to be itchy. The other is on the left front leg in the armpit area. Same kind.

Buddy\'s 4th birthdayHere’s a pic of Buddy’s 4th birthday, the first of the cake parties. He knows about and enjoys them. And he loves his food! He’s my baby. Silly huh? I bought him a new stuffed toy, like he needs another one. Next post will be about the birthday I didn’t think he’d see. Can’t wait!

Angel Bear

Feb 26th, 2009 by Joanne | 2

BearWhen I read Bear’s heart-wrenching story I felt I should link to it for more people to read. OMGosh! I’m so sorry. I treasure every moment I have with my boy and can only imagine the pain of the loss of your best friend Joni. I cry just thinking of him.

Bear passed away only 5 days after his second chemo treatment. He had just been diagnosed with multi-centric lymphoma.

This is a very sad story so be prepared. I can hardly bring myself to read it all. Joni wants people to know of her horrific experience with chemo. I thought I could help her share it too. I hope your sweet Bear will greet my Buddy when his time comes.

A is for Andrographis

Feb 16th, 2009 by Joanne | 1

I’ve been reading more about the tinctures Buddy is taking from my holistic vet. One of them is called Andrographis.

My mom had asked me to look into the newer cold product here in Canada called Cold F/X. When I went to the health food store the owner just happened to have a product on sale which, she said, was exactly the same thing. So I bought it and checked out the ingredients because my mom can’t take a lot of things. I was feeling a bit of a cold coming on too.

Well lo and behold there’s andrographis in it as a secondary ingredient. Fascinating. The primary ingredient is ginseng. My mom took one in the afternoon and it kept her awake all night. I took one because I wasn’t sure if I was actually getting a cold or not. Then later that evening I got the chills and I never get the chills. My mom, who is 85, keeps the heat at 73 degrees in the house, and she still wears a big sweater.  So I don’t get cold. I took 3 capsules that evening per the instructions. Took another 3 the next day 3 times throughout day, had the chills again that night, sore throat and some sinus trouble. Next day I was fine, no chills. It did make my heart beat really hard and fast for a while though. Think I’ll hold off using it too often.

Well, my Bud has been taking Andrographis 3 times a days for his lymphoma since June 2nd, 2008. Each time he gets 1/8 tsp. This is the only tincture he fusses a bit about. I’ve seen Andrographis called The King of Bitters. I usually put a bit extra sardine water on top of the fish when I give him this one. He’s pretty good with his treatments because he really likes sardines. His body,  skin and coat really appreciate all the fish oil he’s getting too. Here is another link to an interesting study on the Antioxidant action of Andrographis on lymphoma in mice.

The Boy is Special

Dec 28th, 2008 by Joanne | 4

The boy is small, actually big for his type, and doesn’t like the wind in his ears. He doesn’t stay outside, it’s whipping all around.

The boy comes with you to the laundry room. He checks the basket for clean or dirty toys, no matter. There he is on the stairs behind you as you head to the bedroom with the basket of clean clothes.

Christmas 2008For Christmas the boy got presents three separate times. He SO loves to get and open presents and yes they have to be new, not old or used, you tried that already…

The boy proved you wrong. The boy’s grandmother had a bag of stuffed toys in her closet that belonged to her angel Velvet. The grandmother wrapped up a stuffed black cat with white toes for the boy and the boy liked it. You asked the boy to get it out from under the desk in the toy basket and he pulled it out and shook it up. Then he chewed on one of his new bones.

That was after the boy had poached salmon with sprinkles of drug-free beef liver for supper. The salmon was mixed with freshly steamed cauliflower, broccoli and swiss chard all finely chopped. The boy’s dish was sparkling clean not long after you put it in front of him. The boy is happy!

The coat the boy has on is so shiny. It must be let’s see…the flax oil, the sardines, the salmon and maybe even the turmeric. Christmas 2008 Opening Presents You can hardly believe how good the boy looks and acts; he’s healthier than he’s been in years!

The boy’s diet and treatment is very consistent. He lets you know whenever it’s time for fish (tinctures) or supper or snack or any of the other daily rituals he’s come to like a lot and expect on time. He let’s you know when he’s tired of drug-free boneless, skinless chicken breasts and wants more fish, especially for breakfast.  He’s letting you know right now that it’s time for his evening sardine and tincture snack. Sometimes his clock is a bit off but it runs pretty smoothly most days!

The boy is special and loved and treated with respect. The boy deserves the best. The boy is my baby Buddy.

The Floaty Thing Moves

Nov 24th, 2008 by Joanne | 1

My Googy BoyWell, Buddy has been stable and healthy for almost all of November now. It’s been a great month for him, and so for me too!

We had to go to the opthamologist on Novemeber 3rd because he got into something that upset his system and the original eye ulcer opened again. I also wanted another experienced opinion on the cyst in his other (right) eye.

Anyhow, here’s my Bud flaking on the couch.

Dr. Zigler at the Mississauga-Oakville Specialist/Emergency Clinic is a super nice man. This was the second time Buddy went to see him and again we got good news!

The cyst is benign and common. They don’t usually do anything about them unless/until they start to block the vision. AND, he said they move. He said if you looked at it while Buddy was on his back, it would probably float up to the top of the eye.

You can see in the pic in his right eye how it has moved off to the side. I’ll have to try and capture him on his back too just for fun.

Dead FrogAh my boy, he is truly feeling well although he was in killer mode today. This morning he tore the foot off a squirrel he’s had for over a year and this afternoon he ripped the guts out of a camo frog I got him about a month ago. What’s up with that Bud? My dorky little guy makes my day! I must say he was pretty organized about it.

Buddy Was Exposed Again

Oct 13th, 2008 by Joanne | 3

I’ve considered this long and hard. There could even be smoke coming out of my ears. I should have followed through with the sciences, but I’ll do my best with logic.

Here’s the timeline of events:

  • Buddy’s eye was scratched by a cat on September 30th;
  • Went to vet for eye on Oct 1st, scratch found in 6 o’clock position;
  • Went back to vet Oct 3rd to ensure eye healing before weekend;
  • Went to my brother’s house in NOTL on Oct 6th, dog exposed to pesticides;
  • Buddy’s eye inflamed and squinty on Oct 8th, went to vet in a.m.;
  • Buddy’s ulcer not healing, actually spread wider, had surgery to debride ulcer;
  • Buddy’s sick to his stomach Oct 10th, has lumps on his forehead and BIG lump inside his left lip, and he’s itchy all over;
  • Buddy starting to feel better on Oct 13th, lumps getting smaller, mouth feeling better and no longer crazy itchy; and
  • Buddy’s eye also seems much better today but E-collar staying on for another day or so.

Buddy Oct 7th, 2008As I mentioned in my last post, when I returned for a recheck on his eye the ‘other’ vet advised me Buddy had a tumour in the other eye that was dangerous and should be seen by a specialist. So when I had to take him back on the 8th for surgery, my regular vet said she saw the notes in Buddy’s file and not to worry about it, it’s just a cyst, no problem. Geez, do they like to freak you out??? She (the other vet) is not too long out of vet college I guess but still, maybe she shouldn’t be left alone (with me and/or Buddy).

It was only bright and early this morning that I was able to put the pieces together. Took me long enough! Here’s my theory as to why Buddy’s eye ulcer didn’t heal properly:  The pesticides did it! The exact same problem happened with his eye 2 years ago. They couldn’t figure out why the eye ulcer wouldn’t heal. We even went to a specialist. I can almost guarantee that they had sprayed the grounds with pesticides and that is why the eye wouldn’t heal. HE CAN’T HANDLE IT! They are poisonous, toxic! They are killing him!

Thank goodness it wasn’t a full blown exposure! I’m putting the homeopathic drops in his water, feeding him good, clean food and giving him lots of rest. He’s recovering well now and the toxins are leaving his system. He’ll be back to himself by next weekend for sure. Buddy’s a fighter! My hero.

Buddy’s Eyes

Oct 6th, 2008 by Joanne | 1

Buddy's EyesMy sister’s boyfriend’s cat decided my dog’s eye was a good place to put his claws. Oh boy was I upset!  We weren’t positive he got the eye but Buddy woke me up for a couple hours in the middle of the night. He was uncomfortable and rubbing the eye so I comforted him, made him stop rubbing and he finally went back to sleep. Then at 7:15am I called the vet and they had an opening at 8:45.

You can’t usually tell with Buddy’s eyes right away, the irritation shows up usually the next day. I was hoping the cat had missed but no such luck. The scratch is in the right eye in the picture, which is Buddy’s left eye. The red mark underneath is some pooling blood. The scratch is vertical and is in the 6 o’clock position.

We saw Buddy’s previous vet who had been on maternity leave since late winter this year. She was surprised to learn of Buddy’s lymphoma. Strange thing about it is we were here first appointment upon return from mat leave. Unusual coincidence? Not so sure.

So my vet wanted Buddy’s eye rechecked in a couple days to ensure it was healing properly. She is working only a couple days a week for now so I had to see another vet for the recheck. Took him in Friday after work and another fluorescein stain was done. It appeared to be healing. Then she advised me that the spot in Buddy’s right eye is a tumour and he should see a specialist. She said it can be very dangerous, that the pressure from the tumour can cause glaucoma. They asked if I wanted the referral for an appointment and I said no. I knew it wasn’t growing very fast as I had been watching it for many months, thinking it was just a floater of some kind. I planned on calling my alternative vet to discuss the problem and we have an appointment next week.

Friday

  • 1/4 cup organic drug-free lean ground beef - raw;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed broccoli;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt.

Afternoon Snack and Meds

  • Buddy had some fresh watermelon as a snack today.

Supper

  • 1/3 cup organic drug-free lean ground beef - raw;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed broccoli;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt; and
  • Dessert at the table with us was some raw zucchini and a few chick peas.

9:30 Snack

  • 3 one inch squares organic drug-free beef liver. (With his turmeric capsule in the liver.)

 Well his stomach is bloated and his stool has gone soft again. So I guess it’s the beef, and he loves it so much, it just really doesn’t agree with him!

I’ve really learned a lot by writing down everthing Buddy’s eating as repetitive as it is. He does the best on just chicken. I’m considering a meal of white fish cooked lightly once in a while. He gets enough fish oil and flax oil so he doesn’t need salmon or anything REALLY oily.  He’s been getting so much oil over the past few months that I’m sure he could swim in the ocean and not be cold. He’s got a nice layer of blubber all over and a beautifully shiny coat! I love him, too much I guess!

We’re going to get him down a pound or two but slowly. He’ll be much better for it!

Buddy’s Homemade Dog Food for Cancer Diary - Day 5

Sep 17th, 2008 by Joanne | 0

This is Buddy’s daily food diary for a one week period. His daily supplements are listed in Cancer Diary - Day 1

Wednesday

Breakfast

  • 1/4 cup organic free range boneless skinless chicken breast -cooked in organic chicken broth and chopped;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed asparagus;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt.

Afternoon Snack and Meds

  • Buddy had some fresh watermelon as a snack today.

Supper

  • 1/3 cup organic free-range boneless skinless chicken breast -cooked in organic chicken broth and chopped;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed asparagus;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt.

8:30 Snack

  • 3 one inch squares organic drug-free beef liver. (With his turmeric capsule in the liver)

He seems to be feeling well today. I gave him a regular size supper tonight and his belly seems slightly distended from that. Maybe even this is too much or something else is going on. Buddy at the Dining Room TableI put some of my Bio-K probiotic drink in his supper, he gets lots of animal based digestive enzymes, some from Berte’s Immune Blend, and more from another whole pill. Could be the slight increase in vegetables, but he’s usually pretty good with asparagus. He does have gas tonight! His stomach is very sensitive! I did give him some chick peas for his dessert. He sits at the table with us and usually eats some veggies while we’re having dinner. Yes he’s spoiled but I love him and it’s not hurting anybody.

We went for a walk in the woods tonight and he slowed down after a bit so he’s still not quite as well as he could be. I’ve noticed his back and hind end area getting kind of hard. That can’t be a good sign but I’ve no idea what it means.

I called the vet to order some more of Buddy’s tinctures. Have to drive up there next Monday because they won’t ship it out. It’s over an hour from here too. Oh well, hope it’s a nice day! It really is a nice rural area with little towns here and there. My holistic vet is close to 70 years old and has a 90 acre farm with about 20 horses, chickens, dogs, a bird and I’m not sure what else. It’s a very interesting place to visit. I’m afraid of not being able to see her in case of an emergency. I will have to ask her if the local clinic could call her to consult in case, just in case.

Buddy’s Homemade Dog Food for Cancer Diary - Day 4

Sep 16th, 2008 by Joanne | 0

This is Buddy’s daily food diary for a one week period. His daily supplements are listed in Cancer Diary - Day 1

Tuesday

Breakfast

  • 1/4 cup organic free range boneless skinless chicken breast -cooked in organic chicken broth and chopped;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed broccoli;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt.

Afternoon Snack and Meds

  • Buddy had some chickpeas as a snack today.

Supper

  • 1/4 cup organic free-range boneless skinless chicken breast -cooked in organic chicken broth and chopped;
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped steamed broccoli;
  • 1 tsp flax oil cottage cheese mixture - The Budwig Protocol;
  • 1 Tbsp organic fat-free plain yogurt.

8:30 Snack

  • 3 one inch squares organic drug-free beef liver. (With his turmeric capsule in the liver)

Tonight I made cookies. Since I had opened a can of chick peas earlier, I used a heaping half cup of them. Then I filled up the rest of the measuring cup with steamed broccoli. I put this mix in a dish, added 6 Tbsp organic chicken broth and used the Braun hand blender to puree it all. Then I just added this to the flour mix. That’s it, no fat, great for him ingredients and he LOVES THEM! The full cookie recipe is on this page.

Buddy is feeling much better today, even playing a little bit. I’m going to keep him on the smaller meals for at least another day, like a cleansing I guess.
